Early Life
Lionel Messi was born in Rosario, Argentina on June 24, 1987. He began playing soccer at a young age and joined the youth team of Newell’s Old Boys, a local club in his hometown. At the age of 11, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency, which required expensive treatment. Messi’s family struggled financially to pay for the treatment, but they were able to do so with the help of a local soccer club, Club Atlético River Plate, which agreed to pay for his treatment in exchange for him joining their youth academy. However, River Plate could not afford to pay for his treatment and as a result, Messi moved to Barcelona, Spain in 2000 at the age of 13 to join the youth academy of FC Barcelona, where he was able to continue his treatment.
